About this practice

This is a self-guided skill-building exercise. It helps you rehearse creating space between an impulse and your response. It is not therapy or emergency support.

Safety first: If someone is in immediate danger, or pausing would increase risk, act for safety and seek appropriate help instead of delaying action.

What the pause does

A pause is not ignoring what you feel. Your emotion is valid. The pause helps you decide how you want to express it, instead of letting the strongest impulse decide for you.

The sequence: Stop. Breathe in through your nose. Breathe out through your mouth like blowing through a straw. Name the emotion. Notice the impulse. Choose what is effective.

What effective means

An effective response is safe, consistent with what matters to you, likely to help the situation rather than only release the impulse, and respectful of your needs and reasonable boundaries.

Benefit: The pause does not force the feeling to disappear. It gives you room to choose behavior with less regret.
